Raising A Reader

The first five years of a child’s life are the most important for developing a passion for books and learning. Parents who share and read books with children from infancy to age five are helping to prepare their children for kindergarten and nurturing a child’s love and enjoyment of learning that can last a lifetime.

Raising a Reader inspires early learning.Raising A Reader is a national, award-winning early literacy program that provides children and their families with the books, encouragement, and support they need to establish a regular routine of sharing stories and reading at home. The program is managed locally in Napa and Solano Counties by Child Start Incorporated.  Raising A Reader partners with area preschools, early childhood home visitors, family child care providers, community family centers and adult education programs, loaning books at no cost to families through a weekly book exchange program.

Studies show that Raising A Reader works. Parents report that Raising A Reader has helped them to increase the number of times they read with their children at home each week, and that their children’s confidence and self-esteem has been boosted by discovering their own capacity for learning.
